I'll refer to them as the old computer and the newer computer. The old one has a ZIP drive and the new one doesn't. I have a family history program called Family Tree Maker in the old computer and all the data is backed up on a 100mb ZIP disk. I decided to give the old computer to my grandkids and so I installed the Family Tree...

They are also called thumb drives, or pen drives, or jump drives, and a 256mb one cost $40 at Radio Shack which means they are cheaper at other locations. Also since I've been thinking on it if there is an mp3 player in the house some of them hold quite a bit of info and it doesn't have to be music. If it is your childs make sure the music is backed up before replacing it with data.or their will be much screaming.
JimL
I just did some checking and you can get a 256mb Lexar "Jump...

If you can afford it, buy yourself a USB memory stick. I've been told the latest ones now hold a whole gig!
I bought my 126MB stick (equals roughly 120 floppy discs?) about 12 months ago now and use it just about every day. Great for transferring stuff between hubbies, mine and my works pc's.
It's perfect for me considering I'm so lousy at understanding how to use alternative file transferring methods.

<img...

Hi

I also use Family Tree Maker and when it got to backingup 23 floppies I had enough and bought an external zip drive and used that. When I changed computers the zip drive wasn't compatible with XP but fortunately I had CDRW drives in both computers and was able to transfer the data that way. It all went on one CD.

It will take you forever to back up on to floppies and the only suggestions I have to add to Jim's is of you don't have a CDRW drive on both computers is to ask...

If you have a new computer it probably has a CDR or DVD recordable drive. I would probably just pull the zip drive and put it in the extra slot or replace the 2nd CD long enough to transfer the data to CDR. It is only a two or three wire hook up and xp or higher will recognize the zip when you hook it up. When done just reverse the process.
If you don't have a CDR drive then I would hook up a Null Modem<<<search term...
