With the price of printers being what they are a new printer is very often cheaper than a replacement cartridge for the ink that comes with a new one.
The big thing that will keep your heads clean is to use the printer at least once a week and print a 1 or 2 inch high by the width of the paper color bar. The biggest cause (but not the only one) of clogging is dry ink in the nozzels. Also "replacement" non branded inks are often more prone to lay around shelves at the store longer than branded ones. This causes, in some cases, the pigments to settle and clump and they may need to be shaken (unless the cartridge manufacturer recommends against it) before installing in the printer. Some cartridges shouldn't be shaken because the cartridge can allow air bubbles to be taken into the ink and this too can kill the print heads.
Some ink suppliers make continous flow ink for popular printers which have the advantage of never letting you run out of ink and also allowing you to purchase in in bulk (or at least larger containers). Some systems of this type also have cleaning solutions which can be easily fed into the system to keep the nozzels in better working condition. Everything depends on they type of work you do and what you expect your printer to accomplish.
