Hi Bel,

When I've needed clear shots of jewelry, I scan the object straight off the scanner, just be extra careful not to scratch the scanner's glass surface or dent the soft white reflective cardboard inside the lid.
I've found that my much older HP scanner produces a lot better result than my newer 'all in one' HP setup.
When I have something chunkier to scan, I leave the lid off and cover the object with a shoebox lid or similar.
You will get an excellent picture this way. Also very handy for identifying jewelry for insurance purposes.

I've had a go at scanning all sorts of stuff, including dead bugs, (don't ask) flowers and foliage.
As long as an object doesn't require too much depth of field, a scanner takes fantastic 'macro' shots.

Check out this shot I made of my watch band (yuk, now I can see it really needs a clean) The left side is the plain scanned result, 200dpi at highest amount of colours. The right is after removing the scanner's BG, adding a white bg and a drop shadow.
