Andrea,
I would be very wary of a HTML tutorial course that has coding errors on it's pages. Check out the 3rd page in, near the bottom. The drop down menu also obscures parts of the graphics when opened. Just a personal thought. It's worth learning though. I tried Front Page Express once. Soon realised it was easier to learn raw HTML than to cope with an editor. You should only use an editor when you already have a working knowledge of HTML. IMHO. I'm sure some will disagree. |

Jezza,
All I really want is some basic knowledge of it and not much else. After the 20 lessons are over I hope to find something like Dreamweaver trial version to make my simple Web page. Oh, based on what I learned tonight in lesson 2 true HTML tags for or <italicisze/> look like this but only ezCodes are available. Hope this works right. Well at least it shows what we were taught. Hope it is correct. LibraryLady |

Just a little note here. I hand code. I use an editor. I am not contradicting myself. (sounds like the beginning of an AA meeting, huh?)
Learn to hand code. Use notepad. Goto www.htmlgoodies.com and learn the very basics. When you can create a simple website, at least, in notepad you can move up to an editor. The difference is, you will use the editor to colorcode your html and to format it so it's pretty and easy to read. You will get yourself in trouble if you rely on the point-and-click features these editors have. There is nothing wrong with using an html editor. Just don't use one as an html "writer". Ciao, Steve

Good advice, Steve.
I use Arachnophilia the same way. It gives an instant view of what I've just written. And, I can view the page in IE, and NS, and a 3rd browser if I had one. If somethings wrong in either, it can be fixed and viewed immediately. Also has a color coder, compression, " beautify HTML " ( for that purdy stuff ). Et..Et..Et.. Its a tall order learning HTML, but well worth the effort. I've said from the get-go about editors, if somethings wrong, and you don't know HTML, theres no way to fix it..and thats the main drawback to being.. editor dependent. |

Going right along with the guys on this one...learning the basics and hand coding in Notepad was definitely worth the time and effort.
Today I use Homesite's editor to make my pages, but it is a notepad style editor with a few bells and whistle's tossed in just to make things a little easier for me, like color-coding my tags, indenting, error checking, etc. I have tried Front Page and Dreamweaver...nice products, but very unreliable - I spent more time cleaning up the coding so my pages would be cross browser compatable than it was worth. Another good source for learning the very basics is davesite.com - he takes things step-by-step in very easy to understand terms. Believe me, learn the basics...then if you want to code with Dreamweaver, etc. and don't like the way your page looks, at least you will be able to switch from WYSIWYG to the basic editor and "fix" the broken bits. |

I have to agree with the usage of Note Pad to code . I also have to admit that playing with Dreamweaver and FP2000 is akin to playing with a new graphics program for me at times . Like a new adventure .
I have a friend in the Neatherlands that has written a little html editor and it's free and realitively easy to use . Here is the link for it ;members.lycos.nl/wtmbos/download.php We also have a forum where I moderate upon occasion.....lol Warm regards , Wizzard Madness takes it's toll.......
Please have exact change . |

Hi everyone,
I never dreamed that throwing out the link to the class would generate so many replies (my two included). People on another bulletin board told me about the same thing time and again: it finally sunk in. I finally found something I could deal with; a class which is done via e-mail. Mind you 1 only do 1 lesson per week and last night I just finished lesson 2. The leader of my small group withing the class of about 200 or so as well as Jenni (from Aussie), the overall instructor told us that we would need to use Notepad. Hope I have the latest version on XP. Linda is Homesite a WYSANG program or a web host. What is the link? Everyoney you are correct, by learning some basics I would be able to catch some erras the program makes thus making my site better assuming I do well in the class. Just so it does the good linking, I am kinda nuetral (just kidding). Thanks for all the comments and helpful links. LibraryLady |

Here is the link to Macromedia's Homesite It's not cheap, about $100, but also has a nice little CSS editor included with it. There is a 30 day free trial available.
There are alot of choices out on the web if you are shopping around for an HTML editor...quite a few are free, too! I am just comfortable with Homesite since I have been using it since it was a freeware program (v2.5) developed by Allaire. |

Linda,
Thanks for the link. When you said "not cheap" I thought you meant $200+. You may not have XP but I do so is it XP ready? The only thing I do not like about free software is that there is no support which comes with it! With that little program called ColorCop which is free the author did give me some support. I was lucky awith that. LibraryLady |
