Posts: 13 11/27/04 6:24	Tags : None I am having problems with my computer freezing up. Not only does it freeze but you can't close out I've tried control escape, control and delete. I've had the prompt of USB device not recognized by windows come up but I dont' understand what it means. We are on XP Home Edition. If anyone has an idea, please share. Thanks for your time as always. Beth

Posts: 13 11/28/04 1:36	Hi Jim and thanks for responding. I should have plenty of ram. The computer freezes anytime it wants to whether I'm surfing or playing in PSP. What is really strange is I hear a deep sort of a deep bell "jingle" when it unfreezes. Now mind you, I dont' hear the jingle each and everytime it freezes; it's on and off thing. The freezing up is so irrating Any input? Thanks again.

Posts: 779 11/30/04 11:54	I would run my virus program with the latest updates and then run spybot or ad-aware (or both). If you haven't made any system changes recently I would guess that you have been infected. I get two or three virus attempts a week in my mail and about one major attempt to break my firewall per week and I'm on dial up. The only solution is to keep your system up to date and keep the anti virus going at all times. Zone Alarm has a free firewall that is fairly easy to use for basic protection. JimL

Posts: 13 12/04/04 5:53	Jim, it looks like it might be my mouse. We switched my mouse plug from the back of the computer to the front. It sticks still but not like it did before. If I stick now, I unplug the mouse for a second, replug it in and I'm good to go. Go figure. Thanks again for your input. I appreciate it.

Posts: 779 12/05/04 4:46	If you have a roller ball type mouse it may just be dirty. Every so often you have to clean the inside of the mouse to keep it operating properly. On optical mice you may need to clean the window where the light shows through. Mice are pretty cheap and if your plug is damaged it will be much better to get a new mouse than to risk a short in the plug. JimL

Posts: 684 12/06/04 12:29	As far as I can tell, you just clean the little sensor on the underside of the mouse. I usually take a q-tip and swab the area. Also clean the little rubber feet. Optical mice work best right on the desk...no mousepad. Your problem might be driver related though from your description above. Do you still keep getting the "installing USB device" pop-up when you reboot? If so, you might want to go to the website of the manufacturer of your mouse and see if there is a better driver for your mouse.

If you have, read on. If not, disregard. He suggests you uninstall the driver and when XP finds the new hardware you can let it locate a suitable driver for you. (probably a windows or 'generic' brand rather than the manufacturers) A lot of what he said went way over my head but from what I could make out, it sounded to me like the new service pack recognises manufacturer's drivers that are 'digitally signed'. (Or more likely from manufacturer's that have kept their dues updated to be included in MS's 'preferred list') Surely that kinda thing doesn't happen in big business! If that fails, do as Jim suggests, go buy a new mouse, preferably a well-known brand.

Posts: 779 12/07/04 2:41	The drivers are signed but the signing indicates they have pretested their equipment and that both they and microsoft certify that it will work with the windos system. I had a card reader that I bought for my WinSE system and when I converted to XP the manufacturer wouldn't update the driver. They suggested I might buy one of their newer readers. I bought a Lexar instead and they have updated it to read the newer high capacity memory cards for free. The first "no service" guy was Belkin if you get the urge to buy one of their products. I would try reinstalling the old driver first though as sometimes the working copy gets corrupted. Windows will find the one you had installed if it is on your hard drive or CD. JimL
