I started this with the long shadow in mind but I had to have something to put it on, so I used a gradient and the "smudge tool" to make the background, used a gradient with the dark side down.....and the smudge tool at various hardness and opacity to make the sun and background plateaus....found a photo of the tree I wanted in Free Photos and extracted the background....applied to the gradient on seperate layer....duplicated that and flipped it, used the "color changer" to make it black and placed it where the shadow should be and lowered its opacity, then used the eraser and warp tool to make it "follow" the ground conture........any claification or questions are most welcome!
Hope this sparkes your imagination!

wasn't until much later, while looking through some of my in-game screenshots, and saw one with my avatar's back, that I put the two together (in my
mind).
